Studying Abe

(No, I haven't seen Lincoln yet.) But I have seen a lot of the photos of Abraham Lincoln popping up online here and there and he certainly does have a fascinating face.

I am working on a larger portrait of him from an Alexander Gardner photograph, and these are some of my preparatory studies (I got carried away with the one on the right). I was trying to find out which ink and pen nib I wanted to use. I very much like the combination of pen & ink and ink wash on toned paper with gouache highlights.

Tortoise & Pen

Wanted to try out a new pen I bought and ended up adding brush & ink washes to it.
From a tortoise (turtle?) photo I took at a reptile show a few years ago.

Still life class

This is the 2nd still life I've painted in my current class at Evanston Art Center.
I have learned a lot.

Wilhelm Baum

I saw this tugboat in the harbor at South Haven and started a pencil sketch en plein air last August. A month ago I decided to look at the reference photo I took and finish this in (mostly) watercolors.

Online Gesture (Figure) Drawings

I haven't posted anything for a while, though I've been working on many things.
One is occasionally exercising by making drawings from this online gesture drawing site (photos for gesture drawings of humans or animals).
